Project Large Marge: Installing Wilwood Front Brakes On Our 1973 Mustang Coupe
In the continuing saga of Project Large Marge, our 1973 Mustang coupe, it’s time to put some serious stopping power on the car. The goal with this car is to have a nice driver, but also a car capable of generating huge smiles at open track days. If you have ever participated in an open track event, you know the importance of having powerful brakes that don’t fade. Stock brakes on most new cars are pretty much useless after one hard lap of a road course, and the stock binders on early muscle cars like our Mustang are done by about the second corner (ask us how we know), so we turned to the braking gurus at Wilwood to satisfy our late-braking driving style.
Project coordinator (and car owner) Jason Lewis went with the Wilwood Superlite 6 (SL6) Big Brake Front Brake Kit with 12.88-inch rotors with red powder-coated six-piston calipers. In this video, Jason shows how to install the system to the ’73, with some good information on packing wheel bearings with grease and safety-wiring the rotors to the rotor hats, so if you’ve never done either one before, this will be a learning experience.
