Muscular Development: Ford Performance’s 2017 Mustang GT
As Mustang enthusiasts, we look to Ford Performance Racing Parts (FPRP) to bring us components and packages designed to make our Mustang quicker and faster in every facet. It’s been this way since the Ford Motorsport days with GT40 intakes, larger throttle bodies, and increased performance cylinder heads and cam designs for our Fox Mustangs back in the day. These days, nothing has changed, and this 2017 Mustang GT development car proves FPRP is just as serious today about performance as it was in the Fox days.
For us, the star of the 2017 Mustang GT development car is the 5.2L XS crate engine (M-6007-A52XS). With 12:1 compression, a forged crank and pistons, Manley H-Beam connecting rods, and a GT350 oil pan and pump kit, the bottom end is down for the get-down. However, add to the bottom end CNC-ported heads, high-performance Gen 2 cams, and a Cobra Jet 5.0L intake and throttle body, and you have a potent package. The development car wears Kooks 1⅞-inch headers and a prototype GT350-based cold air and a FPRP oil-air separator system. Please Santa; bring us one of these engines. We’ve been very good, and we’ll find something to put it in, for sure.
This car, making its debut today at PRI, is a test-bed for new components and packages from FPRP for the latest Mustang, but there are many products on the car that can be applied to any year Mustang. First up; and possibly most important to all Mustang enthusiasts is the 580-horsepower 5.2L XS engine. We’ve been waiting for this engine to hit the market, and here it is. In this particular car, the 5.2L XS engine is paired with a 6R80 automatic, but you can also mate it to any number of manual transmissions, as well.
